Green Warrior Permaculture Aids Bali Farmers with Super-Farmer Project

Content:

THK and Green Warrior Permaculture have teamed up to provide Bali farmers with sustainable and profitable practices.

Bali's tourism industry had slowly destroyed Bali's agriculture through unsustainable business practices that buy Bali’s farmlands and convert them into tourism developments at a rapid pace. With the lack of income, farmers have sold their land, lowering the regions' agricultural vitality.

THK and Green Warrior Permaculture have developed a farming strategy that utilizes conventional farming methods to retain land.

The strategy has the possibility of tripling farmers’ incomes through:

  • Using LEISA (Low External Input Sustainable Agriculture)
  •  Organic farming methods
  • Diversifying their crops

THK will form a Super-Farmer collective, and participating farmers are expected to gain incentives such as:

  • Guaranteed pricing of the existing crops to ensure financial support to experiment with organic farming methods.
  •  A set of Super-Tools
  • Non-hybrid seeds for organic vegetable farming
  •  Field academy training on a working Super-Farm
  • Super-Farmers crops were purchased at a fixed price and sold under the Super-Farmer label.
  • Supported by LEISA extension workers
  • Monthly workshops on new techniques and organic farming strategies
  • Money loans from the Super-Farmer collective to develop farmland or integrate value-adding strategies

THK will provide these incentives to develop a set of ethics tied to farmers' cultural beliefs.

There are two stages of the project.

The first stage involves training farmers to convert land to polyculture farming systems (diversifying crops grown).

Stage two will use farmers who exceeded at stage one to train following generations of super farmers.

THK extension workers will aid the new Super-Farmers with their organic farm plan’s initial design and implementation.

After a year has passed, farmers will obtain an organic farming certification and paid premium prices for their produce.

The Super-Farmer label will sell to establishments that support Bali's organic farmers—encouraging a community of farmers to police their organic certification procedures.

The project has many benefits to not only farmers but land, water, and wildlife as well. A detailed explanation of the project can be found on their website.

Summary:

Green Warrior Permaculture has teamed up with THK to support Bali farmers and improve the agriculture process so farmers in the region may prosper.
